Project Snapshot
Safeguarding Critical Mining Infrastructure Through Proactive Structural Asset Management
Project Overview
Robust Consulting Engineers was appointed by Sasol Mining to undertake the annual structural inspection of civil and structural assets at Syferfontein Colliery in Mpumalanga. The appointment forms part of Sasol’s infrastructure integrity management programme, which aims to ensure that critical mining infrastructure remains safe, reliable and compliant throughout its operational life.
The annual inspections cover a wide range of operational facilities, including conveyor systems, transfer structures, bunkers, crushers, stackers, reclaimers, workshops and associated civil infrastructure. Through detailed condition assessments, Robust Engineers assists Sasol in identifying structural defects before they develop into significant operational or safety risks.
The Challenge
Mining infrastructure operates continuously under some of the harshest industrial conditions. Heavy loading, equipment vibration, corrosion, fatigue, coal dust, moisture and changing environmental conditions all contribute to the gradual deterioration of structural assets.
The client required a systematic inspection programme capable of identifying structural deterioration at an early stage, allowing maintenance activities to be prioritised before defects affected plant availability or compromised employee safety. With numerous critical assets spread across the operation, inspections also needed to be completed efficiently without disrupting production.
The challenge was not only to identify existing defects but also to evaluate their severity, determine the associated structural risk and provide practical engineering recommendations that could be incorporated into the mine’s maintenance planning.
Our Engineering Solution
Robust Engineers developed a structured inspection methodology based on recognised engineering assessment principles and Sasol’s asset integrity requirements.
Each inspection included a detailed visual assessment of structural steelwork, reinforced concrete structures, foundations, access platforms, stairways, handrails, conveyor galleries and associated civil infrastructure. Structural defects such as corrosion, deformation, cracking, settlement, loose connections, damaged protective coatings and deterioration were systematically identified, photographed and documented.
Every observed defect was evaluated according to its potential impact on structural integrity, operational reliability and personnel safety. Defects were categorised according to priority, allowing Sasol to allocate maintenance resources effectively and address high-risk issues before they escalated.
The inspections covered a wide range of operational assets, including:
- Conveyor Belt Crusher Plant
- CV068 Stacker
- CV07, CV08 and CV09 Conveyor Systems
- EP01 Conveyor System
- Reclaimer Structures
- PIT 7 Incline and Stacker
- PIT 6 1000 Bunker
- PIT 6 Conveyor Systems
- PIT 4 Incline and Overland Conveyor Systems
- Conveyor Support Structures
- Transfer Towers
- Structural Steel Platforms and Access Systems
Comprehensive inspection reports were prepared for each inspection, incorporating photographic records, engineering assessments, prioritised defect schedules and practical recommendations for repair, maintenance or further investigation.
Value Delivered
Robust Engineers provides Sasol with far more than routine inspections. Our assessments form an important component of the mine’s proactive asset management strategy by identifying structural issues before they affect production, safety or asset reliability.
By prioritising defects according to engineering risk rather than appearance alone, the inspection reports enable maintenance budgets to be allocated more effectively while reducing the likelihood of unplanned shutdowns and emergency repairs.
The annual inspection programme also provides valuable historical condition data, allowing Sasol to monitor deterioration trends over time and make informed decisions regarding maintenance, refurbishment and future capital investment.
Project Outcome
The annual structural inspection programme has become an integral part of Syferfontein Mine’s infrastructure management strategy, providing confidence that critical operational assets continue to perform safely and reliably.
Through detailed engineering assessments and practical maintenance recommendations, Robust Engineers has assisted Sasol in protecting valuable infrastructure, improving operational reliability and supporting a proactive maintenance culture that reduces long-term lifecycle costs.
The project demonstrates our specialist expertise in structural condition assessments, industrial asset integrity management and engineering inspections for the mining sector.
