Project Snapshot
Protecting Mining Operations and the Environment Through Sustainable Stormwater Engineering
Project Overview
Robust Consulting Engineers was appointed to provide Civil Engineering services for the design of stormwater management infrastructure at Shondoni Colliery, one of Sasol Mining’s flagship coal operations in Mpumalanga. The project was initiated to improve the management of stormwater across the mining complex by separating contaminated runoff from clean surface water, thereby protecting the environment, maintaining regulatory compliance and improving the operational reliability of the mine’s infrastructure.
The engineering solution formed part of the mine’s broader environmental management strategy, ensuring that stormwater generated during rainfall events was safely conveyed, controlled and managed without compromising mining operations or surrounding watercourses.
The Challenge
Mining operations generate both contaminated and uncontaminated stormwater, and it is essential that these two water streams remain separated. During heavy rainfall events, uncontrolled runoff had the potential to erode infrastructure, overwhelm existing drainage systems and allow contaminated water to enter nearby natural watercourses, creating environmental and regulatory risks.
The client required a robust stormwater management system capable of safely collecting, conveying and controlling runoff across the operational areas of the mine while reducing sediment transport and minimising maintenance requirements. The solution also had to accommodate operational traffic, integrate with existing infrastructure and withstand the demanding conditions associated with an active coal mining environment.
Our Engineering Solution
Robust Engineers developed a comprehensive stormwater management system specifically designed to improve water control across the mining operation while protecting the surrounding environment.
The design incorporated a network of reinforced concrete V-drains to collect and convey surface runoff, strategically positioned road crossing culverts to maintain access routes, reinforced concrete manholes and interconnecting drainage pipelines linking the new infrastructure with the existing stormwater network.
A key feature of the project was the design of a multifunctional attenuation and silt trap pond. The structure was engineered to perform two critical functions: slowing stormwater velocities during heavy rainfall events to reduce downstream erosion, while simultaneously trapping sediment before water entered the downstream drainage system. The pond was also designed with maintenance in mind, providing sufficient access for mechanical cleaning equipment such as skid steer loaders, allowing accumulated sediment to be removed quickly and safely during routine maintenance.
Where contaminated runoff was generated, the drainage system directed water towards a lined containment facility, preventing polluted water from mixing with clean runoff and reducing the environmental impact of mining operations.
Value Delivered
Robust Engineers delivered a practical and sustainable stormwater management solution that significantly improved both environmental protection and operational efficiency. By separating clean and contaminated runoff, the system supports compliance with environmental legislation while reducing the risk of pollution incidents and protecting nearby natural water resources.
The integrated drainage design also enhances the resilience of the mine’s infrastructure during severe weather events by reducing flooding, minimising erosion and protecting roads and operational areas from storm damage. The inclusion of maintenance-friendly infrastructure further reduces long-term operational costs while improving the efficiency of routine maintenance activities.
Through careful hydraulic design and practical engineering, Robust Engineers delivered infrastructure that supports both environmental stewardship and uninterrupted mining operations.
Project Outcome
The completed stormwater management system has strengthened Shondoni Mine’s environmental performance by providing reliable control of both contaminated and uncontaminated runoff. The project has improved operational resilience, reduced environmental risk and enhanced the long-term sustainability of the mine’s civil infrastructure.
This project demonstrates Robust Engineers’ expertise in delivering innovative civil engineering solutions for the mining industry, combining hydraulic engineering, environmental protection and practical constructability to create infrastructure that performs reliably under demanding operating conditions.
