Project Snapshot
Enhancing Correctional Facility Security Through Innovative Structural Engineering
Project Overview
Robust Consulting Engineers was appointed by the National Department of Public Works to provide Structural Engineering services for the security upgrade of the Queenstown Correctional Centre in the Eastern Cape. The project formed part of the Department’s ongoing programme to improve security within correctional facilities by strengthening existing infrastructure and reducing the risk of inmate escapes.
Working alongside the appointed contractor, Robust Engineers was responsible for the structural design, construction monitoring and technical support required to deliver a secure overhead steel mesh system over multiple prison courtyards. The project demanded engineering solutions that balanced maximum security with durability, practicality and compliance with stringent correctional facility requirements.
The Challenge
The Queenstown Correctional Centre contained several open exercise courtyards that presented a potential security risk due to the possibility of escape attempts. The Department of Public Works required a permanent engineering solution that would significantly improve security while allowing the courtyards to remain functional for daily inmate activities.
The project involved working within an operational correctional facility where construction activities had to be carefully coordinated to minimise disruption to daily operations while maintaining the highest levels of safety and security. The solution also needed to withstand long-term exposure to environmental conditions while requiring minimal maintenance throughout its service life.
Our Engineering Solution
Robust Engineers developed a purpose-designed overhead structural steel system spanning the prison courtyards and supporting high-strength welded steel mesh. The system was engineered to provide an effective physical barrier without compromising natural light, ventilation or the operational functionality of the courtyards.
Our scope included the structural design of the steel support framework, detailed connection design, fabrication drawings and engineering specifications required for construction. The welded mesh system was designed with 100 mm x 100 mm spacing to provide maximum security while maintaining visibility and airflow throughout the enclosed spaces.
In addition to the engineering design, Robust Engineers provided construction monitoring and technical support throughout implementation, ensuring that the installation complied with the approved engineering designs, project specifications and quality standards
Value Delivered
The project demonstrates Robust Engineers’ ability to apply structural engineering expertise to highly specialised security infrastructure. By developing a customised steel support system specifically suited to the operational requirements of a correctional environment, we delivered a durable and cost-effective solution that significantly enhanced facility security without the need for major alterations to the existing buildings.
Our involvement throughout both the design and construction phases ensured that engineering quality, structural integrity and constructability were maintained, reducing project risks and supporting efficient project delivery.
The completed solution provides the Department of Public Works with infrastructure that is robust, low maintenance and capable of providing reliable security for many years.
Project Outcome
The successful completion of the Queenstown Correctional Centre security upgrade has significantly strengthened the safety and security of the facility by reducing opportunities for inmate escapes while preserving the operational use of the exercise courtyards.
Through innovative structural engineering and close collaboration with the project team, Robust Engineers delivered a practical solution that meets the stringent operational requirements of a correctional environment while demonstrating our capability in the design of specialised steel structures for high-security facilities.
