Pikitup Marlboro Depot Redevelopment

Project Overview

Robust Consulting Engineers was appointed by Pikitup SOC Ltd to provide Civil, Structural and Architectural Engineering services for the redevelopment of the Marlboro Depot in Sandton, Gauteng. The project formed part of Pikitup’s ongoing infrastructure improvement programme aimed at upgrading existing municipal facilities to improve operational efficiency, employee welfare and service delivery.

The redevelopment involved the construction of a new multi-purpose hall, refurbishment of existing office accommodation, upgrades to ablution facilities and the development of heavy-duty parking infrastructure capable of supporting the depot’s daily operations. Working within an existing operational depot, Robust Engineers delivered engineering solutions that maximised the use of the available site while minimising disruption to municipal services.

The Challenge

The Marlboro Depot was an ageing operational facility that required significant upgrades to meet the growing operational demands of one of Johannesburg’s busiest waste management service providers. Existing buildings required refurbishment and expansion, while supporting infrastructure needed to accommodate larger vehicle fleets, improved staff facilities and enhanced operational functionality.

One of the key engineering challenges was delivering the project within an active municipal depot. Construction activities had to be carefully planned to ensure that essential municipal services continued uninterrupted while new infrastructure was integrated with the existing facilities. The engineering design also had to accommodate existing buildings, underground services and site constraints without compromising structural integrity or operational efficiency.

Our Engineering Solution

Robust Engineers developed an integrated Civil, Structural and Architectural solution that transformed the depot into a modern operational facility capable of supporting Pikitup’s long-term service delivery objectives.

The project included the structural design of a new multi-purpose hall comprising reinforced concrete foundations, reinforced concrete columns and beams, suspended floor slabs, staircases and a mezzanine level providing elevated seating. The roof structure utilised engineered lattice steel trusses supporting Chromadek roof sheeting on cold-formed steel purlins, providing a durable and cost-effective roofing solution.

The external walls incorporated reinforced cavity masonry construction supported by reinforced concrete ground beams and foundations designed to accommodate the building loads while ensuring long-term durability. In addition to the new building works, Robust Engineers designed the heavy-duty parking facilities required to accommodate municipal service vehicles and supervised the refurbishment of office accommodation and staff ablution facilities to modern workplace standards.

Throughout construction, our team provided engineering supervision and quality control services to ensure that all works complied with the approved designs, relevant South African standards and the client’s operational requirements.
