Project Overview

Robust Consulting Engineers was appointed as the Structural Engineering consultant as part of a multidisciplinary professional team responsible for reviving the Mkhondo Agricultural Hub in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga. The project involved the structural assessment, redesign and completion of a partially constructed agricultural processing facility that had been abandoned before completion.

Developed as a catalyst for agricultural development and local economic growth, the hub was intended to provide modern processing, storage and distribution facilities that would support emerging and commercial farmers by adding value to agricultural produce before it reached the market.

The Challenge

Construction of the Agricultural Hub had stalled before completion, leaving several partially completed structures that required detailed engineering assessments before construction could resume. The client needed to determine whether the existing structures could safely be retained, modified or strengthened, while ensuring that the completed development would comply with current engineering standards.

The project presented a unique challenge because every structure had to be individually assessed before engineering decisions could be made. Existing foundations, reinforced concrete elements and structural steel components had to be evaluated to determine their suitability for continued use, minimising unnecessary demolition while maintaining structural integrity and public safety.

The completed facility also needed to accommodate a diverse range of agricultural operations, including fresh produce handling, storage, retail activities, abattoir facilities and administration offices.

Our Engineering Solution

Robust Engineers carried out detailed structural assessments of the incomplete development, evaluating the condition and structural adequacy of the existing buildings and identifying areas requiring modification or strengthening.

Our engineering team developed structural solutions for approximately 3,250 m² of buildings, including retail facilities, fresh produce warehouses, wash bays, administration offices and abattoir buildings. Where deficiencies were identified, Robust Engineers redesigned the affected structural elements, including reinforced concrete foundations, columns, beams and roof support systems, ensuring compliance with current structural design standards.

A key component of our appointment involved the structural redesign of the 1,459 m² fresh produce packing warehouse, where alterations were required to improve functionality while maintaining structural stability. Throughout construction, Robust Engineers provided construction monitoring and quality assurance services to verify that the completed works complied with the approved engineering designs and project specifications.

Value Delivered

Rather than recommending wholesale demolition and reconstruction, Robust Engineers adopted a practical engineering approach focused on maximising the use of existing infrastructure wherever technically feasible. This approach reduced construction costs, minimised delays and allowed significant portions of the original investment to be retained.

By carefully assessing each structure and designing only the necessary modifications, we provided the client with an efficient and cost-effective engineering solution that balanced structural safety with project affordability.

The completed engineering designs also positioned the Agricultural Hub for future expansion while ensuring that the facilities could support modern agricultural processing and storage operations for many years to come.
