Project Overview

Robust Consulting Engineers was appointed to provide Structural Engineering services for the development of the Lusikisiki Village Clinic in the Eastern Cape. The project formed part of the Department of Health’s programme to improve access to quality healthcare by constructing a modern, fully equipped healthcare facility capable of serving the growing needs of the surrounding communities.

Designed as one of the region’s flagship healthcare developments, the facility was planned to accommodate a comprehensive range of primary healthcare services while providing modern accommodation for healthcare professionals. Robust Engineers was responsible for delivering innovative structural engineering solutions that addressed the site’s challenging terrain while ensuring the facility met the highest standards of safety, durability and functionality.

The Challenge

The Department of Health required the development of a world-class healthcare facility that could provide comprehensive medical services in a rural environment where access to quality healthcare had historically been limited. The clinic was designed to accommodate emergency services, maternity care, dental facilities, optometry, rehabilitation services, chronic patient care and pharmaceutical services, creating a single healthcare hub capable of serving the wider community.

One of the project’s greatest engineering challenges was the site’s difficult topography. The accommodation block for healthcare professionals had to be located separately from the main clinic building, requiring the development of a safe and accessible connection between the two structures without compromising functionality or patient movement. The project was also developed as one of the Department’s early facilities designed to support the implementation of South Africa’s National Health Insurance (NHI), placing additional emphasis on long-term durability, operational efficiency and future adaptability.

Our Engineering Solution

Robust Engineers developed an integrated structural engineering solution that combined robust reinforced concrete construction with innovative structural steel elements to overcome the site’s challenging conditions.

The project included the structural design of the main healthcare facility together with a standalone three-storey accommodation building for medical practitioners. To overcome the significant change in ground levels between the two buildings, Robust Engineers designed a suspended pedestrian bridge spanning approximately 20 metres, providing safe and convenient access between the accommodation and the clinic.

Our structural scope also included the design of reinforced concrete raft foundations to support the clinic buildings, reinforced concrete retaining structures, structural steel roof systems and an elevated water tank structure to ensure reliable water storage for continuous healthcare operations. Every structural element was designed to maximise durability, minimise maintenance requirements and provide a safe environment for patients, healthcare workers and visitors.

The use of raft foundations and carefully engineered retaining structures reduced construction risk while providing stable support for the buildings under varying ground conditions.

By combining practical engineering with long-term sustainability, Robust Engineers helped create healthcare infrastructure that supports improved service delivery while reducing lifecycle maintenance costs for the Department of Health.
